About

Marco L. Polo graduated from the University of British Columbia School of Architecture in 1985.  He subsequently worked in professional practice in Toronto, primarily with Montgomery and Sisam Architects, where he contributed to several award-winning projects.  He has published extensively on architecture and design in the popular press as well as professional and scholarly journals, and was editor of Canadian Architect from 1997 to 2003.

Since joining Ryerson University’s Department of Architectural Science in 2002, Marco’s teaching focus has been in architecture theory, architectural writing and the design studio, and in September 2009 he became director of the department's Undergraduate Program. He recently collaborated with Professor John McMinn of the University of Waterloo School of Architecture on 41° to 66° Architecture in Canada: Region, Culture, Tectonics, an exhibition selected to represent Canada at the 2008 Venice Biennale of Architecture. 

Marco served as editor of The Prix de Rome in Architecture: A Retrospective, published in the fall of 2006 (Coach House Books), and in 2007 co-edited, with Professors Colin Ripley and Arthur Wrigglesworth of Ryerson University, In the Place of Sound: Architecture | Music | Acoustics (Cambridge Scholars Press).  His research, which concerns the history, theory and criticism of Canadian architecture, was recognized with the Ryerson University Faculty of Engineering, Architecture and Science Research Excellence Award for 2006.  Marco was Visiting Professor at the Centre for the Study of Theory and Criticism at the University of Western Ontario for 2008-2009, and in 2010 was elected to the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada's College of Fellows.
